Spring women's fair features female speakers

All-new event hosts Cariboo Idol 2014, replaces mega show

The inaugural Cariboo Women's Fair brings something new to the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Mother's Day weekend, May 9-10.

The new fair is intended as a large-scale event to replace the former Mega Show.

Organizer Kimberley Vance-Lundsbye says it aims to attract an abundance of women, vendors, exhibitors and speakers – but men are welcome, too.

It's the first women's fair of this scale to be held in the North, despite their increasing popularity across Western Canada, she notes.

The fair will centre on themes of health and wellness, beauty and fashion, products and services, and women in business.

Vance-Lundsbye says mothers and daughters are especially welcome to turn out for a fun Mother's Day-weekend activity. (The fair does not run on May 11, to accommodate other family time on Mother's Day.)

An adults-only fashion show on May 9 will feature local clothing and accessories, with appetizers and a cash bar. The cost of admission is $10 at the door.

The Baladi Babes belly dance group will also perform on Friday night, followed by psychic Rena Mac.

On May 10, the fair will feature local vendors and various speakers, with an admission of $5.

The first public performance of Cariboo Idol 2014, which returns after a year off, will entertain the crowds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mac will do readings and hold a mini-workshop, and Linda Jefferson of New Roads Nutritional Consulting will speak on women's wellness.

Local businesses are encouraged to register for the fair, such as clothing stores to showcase their merchandise and salons to offer some hair and beauty services, she explains.

Vendors selling products or services of interest to women are still being sought.
