Spring has sprung: the greening at Canim Lake

Dear Canimites,

Canim Lake has exploded in a green right out of Ireland. With the frequent rains and bright sun, the cedars of the north-facing slopes are lifting their heads in high hope.

In the south-facing woodlands, the flowers abound, yellow mats of Arnica, shy and delicate Hooker's Fairy Bells, Pussy Toes, Small-flowered Blue-eyed Mary, Oregon Grape, Clematis, Mountain Ash, Bear Berry, Saskatoon - nature's statement about the goodness of the earth.

Meanwhile, Canim lakeside residents have watched with trepidation as the water level rises to unusually high marks. Old hands are saying it is “the highest in 25 years,” while others say “the highest ever.”

And no wonder, as Bridge Creek, as well as Jim and Red creeks, are at the top of their banks, the roiling current churning up sediment as the waters from high elevations make their frantic dash for the lake. A few docks and wharves have made their bid for freedom, only to be corralled quickly by watchful owners.  Fortunately, the lake level now seems to be stabilized.

Canim and Mahood falls are a sight to behold, and definitely worth the drive, especially if you have guests. At the time of writing, a grader has been working the South Canim (8100) Road, leaving completed sections in perfect condition.

Planting for sale

Canim and Hawkins women gathered at Don and Jean Reynolds' home to plant the many hanging baskets to be sold at the plant and bake sale.

The proficiency of these women is a marvel to see. Don and I stayed well out of the way as they expertly mixed the plantings making sure each basket was full and interesting.  In 30 minutes, it was all over but for the cup of tea.

Aid for Japan

Hisako Arai is happy to let people know she has sent a bank draft for 500,000 Yen to Nippon Hahaoya Taikai (Japan Mothers' Convention), Miyagi Chapter, the result of her fundraising for the victims of the March 11 quake and tsunami.

In Canadian terms, that's $6,070, which was donated by 14 people.  Hisako says she "really appreciates" people's concern and response to her appeal.

People news

• Carol MacKenzie is helping with the maintenance chores at the Mahood Lake Provincial Park campground this summer.

She and husband, Bob, have lived for 21 years at their Mahood Valley Ranch, a few kilometres west of the lake and south of the Mahood Lake Road. Carol is recently retired from the nursing career, which had her commuting to 100 Mile House and Clearwater.

Back in the park, Mahood Lake is lapping at the top of the bank above the beach, and has swamped low lying areas and the boat launch. Carol cautions boaters to watch out for the floating debris that now dots the lake.

• Kira Saenger, Violet Stock and Hisako will be performing at a speech arts recital at the Forest Grove Community Hall at 6:30 p.m. on June 10.  All are welcome.

• This is the “year of the owls” at Canim with people on both sides reporting repeated sightings. Brian and Margo Wagner's dog has the occasional conversation with them, woofing and howling back and forth. Who knew?

That's all for now. Until next time, here's wishing you many blessings.
