South Cariboo artist showcased

Community news happening around the Deka Lake area

The work of German-born Birgit Bienek, an extraordinarily creative person who immigrated to Canada in 1991, is on display in Bridge Lake Library’s Community Showcase during November

A member of Bridge Lake Photo Club, Birgit used to take travel shots of holidays, record-style, and really enjoyed it, but was “frustrated when they weren’t good enough” and gave up photography.

She got back to it with the digital age.

She doesn’t really have a favourite subject as her work varies widely, from nature to action shots and city scenes.

She adds, “I enjoy close-ups, but also wide open spaces with wide angle lenses.”

Birgit’s flora and fauna shots often graced the cover of the now-defunct “Interlaker” and several of her wildlife-family photos, often taken in her own yard, have
been published in the Free Press.

Birgit will also display her “artwork.” She explains: “I was always intrigued with weaving but I’m not a fabric person.

Then I took a course in basketry weaving with Martha Cloudesley and now use that technique to create – sometimes baskets, sure – but mostly free-form pieces. What really gives me joy is to use the technique to create pieces which include grasses, branches, roots and things.

Two of these pieces will be included in my display.”
