Inspired by the sold-out event in Quesnel last month, local supporters Ashley Caines and Kimberly Vance-Lundsbye are organizing a Soup for Syria evening in 100 Mile House at The Valley Room on May 13.

“I was so inspired by the collective approach to the Quesnel event,” says Vance-Lundsbye.

“We are going to follow their lead. We need soup makers to bring their crockpots, people to bake bread and wash dishes … just help.”

Keeping with the collective theme, community members can sponsor one of the 12 tables at the event and bring their own centrepiece and other table decor to bring life to the event.

The rental fee for the event has been donated by Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy. This will allow for 100 per cent of all funds raised through ticket sales ($20/ticket) and donations offered at the event to go directly to the Williams Lake Refugee Sponsorship Group, Vance-Lundsbye explains.

She says the Williams Lake group is close to reaching its goal to bring a refugee family to their community.

Donations of baby carriers will be accepted at the event to be sent to the Carry the Future charity to support Syrian mothers and their babies.

“People here come together to help in any way they can,” Caines says, adding a giving spirit in the community was one of the first things she noticed about the South Cariboo after moving to the area two years ago.

“I keep thinking about the quote about how our children will learn from what we do, not from what we say,” says Vance-Lundsbye.

“I have a five-year-old son. Syrian children that age have only known war their whole lives. It is heartbreaking.”

Tickets will be available at Higher Ground Natural Foods in 100 Mile House.
