It’s time to dig out some rods and worms.

The Fishing Highway 24 Association are hosting their 3rd annual ice fishing derby on Feb. 24 at the Loon Bay Resort on Sheridan Lake.

“The fishing derby starts at 7 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m. and the biggest fish wins,” said Ralph Meili, the treasurer of the association.

The first prize for the biggest fish is $1,000 in cash. Second is $600 and third is $400 in retail value. Door prizes are also available.

Tickets are sold at several locations, including Lone Butte Sporting Goods. The Country Pedlar, Interlakes Rona, 100 Mile House Visitor Centre, Screamin’ Reel - 100 Mile House and more. Tickets are $10 for a single pass and $20 for a family pass.

“Last year we sold about 170 tickets and we hope this year we can sell over 200 if possible. That’s the goal,” said Meili.

Beverage and vendors will also be on site, providing soups and a barbecue.

The Fishing Highway 24 Association decided to do the fishing derby after a private citizen stopped doing one on Sheridan Lake.

Fish need to be handed in to be weighed before 2 p.m. as per BC Fishing Regulations Region 5. No vehicles are allowed on the lake except snowmobiles and ATVs.
