What would you do if you discovered you were lost in the woods?

Al Modin of Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) put that question to the students of David Stoddart School on March 28.

Modin, along with Corey Peterson from the South Cariboo SAR in 100 Mile House attended the school to present two programs to the students.

The grades 6 to 12 students learned how to be prepared when going into the outdoors with the Survive Outside presentation. The presentation included information about SAR in our region, the code of responsibility, including the 10 essentials, trip plan, do's and don'ts and outdoor travel tips.

The kindergarten to Grade 5 students attended the Hug-A-Tree & Survive presentation. They learned the rules for going outdoors and what to do if they get lost.

They were instructed to find a tree and stay put, how to use emergency shelters (an orange plastic bag with a hole cut for their faces), attract attention by blowing a whistle and waving the orange bag when they hear searchers.

Schools and groups that frequently spend time in the outdoors can check out the website at www.adventuresmart.ca to learn about the program and ask for a presentation to be given in their area.

Great service

Dina Connon was recently presented with a gift from the Village of Clinton in honour of her 35 years of service.

She is a valuable member of the village staff and has so much knowledge of the happenings in and around Clinton. Let's hope she isn't thinking of retiring any time soon. We'd be lost without her.
