Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) student Hayden Prodnuk won a medal for finishing second in the Carpentry Skills Canada Competition held in Kamloops at Thompson Rivers University.

According to Prodnuk, he was the only high school student in the competition with the rest being all university level.

“It was from 8:30 in the morning until 2 o’clock and I had to make a small frame structure that had a window and a door and a roof on it.”

He first started doing carpentry with his grandpa when he was really young. Eventually, that grew into Prodnuk taking carpentry courses and now the competition and going to Thompson Rivers University for carpentry for his first semester of grade 12.

“First I heard about it from my carpentry teacher out of PSO. I was really intrigued and wanted to compete in it.”

This was Skills Canada’s regional competition. Prodnuk says he’s hoping to participate in the provincial competition next year.

“I was really surprised. I wasn’t looking to place. I was just looking for just the experience and, hopefully, to learn and I ended up coming second which is a great accomplishment.”

Prodnuk is hoping to work his way up to becoming a general contractor.
