Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) 2018 Graduate Lydia Kinasewich has won a Governor General’s Academic Bronze Medal.

“It’s a huge honour, I’m kinda shocked. Yeah, it’s such a huge honour and it’s really nice to be recognized.”

The medal is awarded to the student with the highest standing (grades) in their school.

“I know the competition was really tough,” says Kinasewich, adding that she’s pretty close with all the others that were in the running.

“I know how hard they work and how close the grades were. I was pleasantly surprised.”

She’s lived in 100 Mile for her entire school career and says she really enjoyed her time at PSO.

“I just really enjoy learning. I like taking part in all the classes and stuff and I made some really great connections with my friends and my friends are also really involved in the school and the local community.”

Kinasewich is heading up to the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, where she’ll be taking psychology but she’s not entirely sure what she wants to do yet, she says.

She was also the Renaissance award winner this year which is based on staff consensus on the best well-rounded student, according to Principal Geoff Butcher.

“She has been a great volunteer, an excellent musician, and community and school representative with a 98 per cent average in her grade 11 and 12 courses.”

She and other students were recognized at grad ceremonies earlier in the year.

“She and the other students were recipients of Honour Roll medals at year end for being on the honour roll every reporting period in grade 10-12. One student was missed and I would like to also recognize Anikka Nielsen for qualifying for the Honours medal. I’ll be in touch with her and her family regarding this award. This group of students has been highly motivated and excellent ambassadors for PSO and I wish them all the best.”

The medal is awarded at four levels: Bronze at the secondary school level, collegiate bronze at the post-secondary diploma level, silver at the undergraduate level and gold at the graduate level.
