No Idle Hands Here

Forest Grove news

When you see some of the regulars sitting around at the 50-plus coffee gathering at the Forest Grove Legion, the women, at least, are not just chatting. Many of them are busily knitting little projects with scarcely a glance at their knitting needles.

One such lady is Mary Stennerson. She's been coming to these social gathering for a long time, but she has been knitting even longer.

This past winter Mary knitted 52 lap robes, a project she enjoyed because it helps people less fortunate than most.

Lap robes are special housecoats, of sorts, used by patients who are restricted to wheelchairs and are unable to get up easily.

When her project was finished she packed the pieces into several big black plastic trash bags and had them sent to George Derby Hospital at the Coast.

And what now for Mary? She already has another project underway and winter is a little way off.

This 50-plus coffee group meets every Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m. and everyone in that age group is welcome. Donations to cover the cost of the coffee are appreciated. Coffee mugs are supplied, but participants supply the tall tales.

Calendar reminder

Remember the Legion Ladies Auxiliary is working on a fundraiser and it consists of making a calendar for the new year.

It's a special calendar in that many of the dates have small entries already in it. The entries are gathered by auxiliary members, and after the year is laid out, the draft is sent out for printing and publishing.

Folks can have a hand in the creation of the 2012 calendar if they have something they would like others to see when they look at their calendar next year. Special events and unique occasions can be placed on any date for the new year and many people will run into it when they scan the weeks and months.

Merchants and business people can also place ads here so their services are in our full view in the kitchen or workshop.

If you are interested in this concept, call Pat Fitzel at 250 395-1336. She can also give you some ideas how to maximize your space.

Going Italian

Starting in the near future the newest member of the business community in Forest Grove will be providing pizza and hot subs.

Behind the hardware store in Forest Grove, adjacent to the Legion, Dave Gizby is working hard to get things going. All the equipment needed for such an operation is being brought in to complete the project of building a pizza shop, which started just a short while ago.
