New Society Act workshop coming soon

Good opportunity for not-for-profit organizations to learn new rules

Folks who belong to not-for-profit organizations will want to attend an important workshop to learn how to deal with the Societies Act, which is changing and will come into effect on Nov. 28.

The fifth Non Profit Board Development Skills Workshop is scheduled for June 14 at Horton Ventures, at 808 Alpine Ave. in 100 House, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This seminar will provide the information on the bylaw and policy changes necessary for organizations to effectively make the transition when the new act is proclaimed.

Facilitator, Martha Rans, is the legal director of Pacific Legal Education Outreach Society, which operates Artists’ Legal Outreach and Law for Nonprofits programs.

According to statistics, there are some 27,000 registered societies in British Columbia. 100 Mile House and area has quite a few non-profit societies, organizations and associations fulfilling a broad range of functions, everything from sports, health, education, communities and more.

The act governs how societies (not-for-profit corporations) are created and run in B.C. and includes significant updates to allow for more flexibility in how societies operate, while still protecting the public interest.

The official proclamation of the new Societies Act will take place this fall and there will be a two-year transition period by which time all societies in BC will have to make the switch to the new regulations.

Call Debbra Williams at 250-395-5155 for more information or e-mail cfec@cariboofamily.org.

For more information on what your society will need to do to get ready for the new act, including transition requirements, check the BC Registries web-site at BCRegistries@gov.bc.ca, or visit Rans’ website at lawfornonprofits.ca, which carries information about the new act.
