Marsh trail opening for walking and wheeling

The 100 Mile Marsh trail officially opens on June 4 coinciding with Access Awareness Day.

Awareness Day is a campaign across British Columbia that promotes and ensures communities are as accessible and inclusive as possible.

"Everyone is invited to walk, stroll, bike or wheel around the trail," says Shelly Somerville, Aging with Disabilities Committee chair.

She adds the walk may take up to 45 minutes to complete.

Last November, Somerville traversed the trail with Kary Fell, of CARE (Creating Accessible Recreational Environments) Consulting, who is confined to a wheelchair.

"Kary deemed the trail usable but difficult then. Now, part of the trail is paved thanks to Katchmar Construction.

"The objective is to have the whole trail paved in the near future," Somerville says, adding the trail is at the "accessible" rating.

The official opening by Mayor Mitch Campsall will be at 10 a.m., near the South Cariboo Visitor Centre, with councillors and other dignitaries attending.
