Roe Lake & District Recreation Commission (RLDRC) president Carolyn Charlton says the Magoo Memorial Funball Tournament, Aug. 10-11, was very successful, especially considering the extreme heat.

In 1976, this RLDRC tournament was conceived by Gary Cleveland to raise funds for Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion tour, and has continued ever since.

In 1986, its name was changed to honour its “colour commentator,” Michael “Magoo” Barkley of Sheridan Lake, who passed away in a motorcycle accident that year.

While his mother, Irene, passed away only last year at the age of 94, his brother, Bruce, still lives at Sheridan Lake, and his sister is at Sulphurous Lake.

Of this year’s tournament, Carolyn says: “They all played hard and had a good time, and are looking forward to doing it again next year. And the children had a great time playing in the dirt; there were no unhappy kids.”

Nine teams competed, with the win going to Barry Larson’s Red Rock. The Paddison Family’s Blue Roof came second, and The Amigos out of Forest Grove placed third.

Apropos organization, Carolyn said: “Barry Larson and Lee Hanson picked up the slack and off they went. I was so impressed to see our younger people taking over from the old ones who are fading away, and they did a blazing good job. I also liked the fact that there was lots of good sportsmanship this year, which was great to see.”

Most competitors slept over at Interlakes Rodeo Grounds in motor homes and the like, except for those who had relatives in the area, she adds.

“The grounds were well-used and with respect.”

New hours delayed

Given the input received at its July 25 information meeting, the Cariboo Regional District has delayed implementing new hours at Interlakes Landfill Site until Sept. 15.

The dump is, therefore, open all the time until then.

AGM scheduled

The Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department’s annual general meeting is at the Interlakes Hall tonight (Aug. 21) at 7 p.m.

In addition to regular reports and election of officers, the annual quilt draw will be held.

Celebration

We send champagne and caviar for Marion Traill’s 83rd birthday; 11 big balloons to Dirk Verheul; and birthday bubbly to Isabelle Poirier.

Congratulations on their 40th wedding anniversary, Aug. 24, to Elaine and Bill Adams.

On Aug. 25, Sandy and Jaime Law celebrate 12 years of marriage, while Moira and Larry Davies celebrate 47 on Aug. 26.
