HIV/AIDS Awareness Walk scheduled

Canim Lake Band hosts HIV/AIDS walk

The Canim Lake Band will hold its 14th Annual HIV/AIDS Awareness Walk on Sept. 23 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the White Feather Family Centre.

The gathering will raise awareness and provide educational information together with the Circle of Life (Tsqlexes re wumec) HIV/AIDS Support Group.

Everyone is welcome to attend to participate in the awareness walk, educate themselves with the information provided about health and safety, AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) or learn about the support available from the Circle of Life group.

Health assistant and Circle of Life member Gladys Rowan says the walk will begin at the centre at 1 p.m. and head down to the Eliza Archie Memorial School and then loop back along a different route.

"We are trying to encourage anybody to come out. Everyone is welcome for increasing awareness and support for HIV and AIDS."

There are some minor changes this year, with a little later starting time, and a big cake and refreshments to be served after the walk, she explains, and then several speakers will offer a measure of their wisdom.

The event will be accompanied by drumming, and Rowan adds folks are encouraged to bring a drum if they have one.

The White Feather Family Centre is located 32 kilometres from 100 Mile House on Canim-Hendrix Lake Road (just north of town). Head east through Forest Grove to just past the second 60 km/h sign, then watch for the signs.

A fundraiser for the Circle of Life HIV/AIDS Support Group will also be held on Sept. 30 at the centre, and it will offer tasty home baking, chili and bannock, and popcorn for sale.

The Circle of Life group welcomes new members, so folks who are interested can call 250-397-2717.
