The slogan of 4-H Club is "learn to do by doing."

Today (Aug. 21), members of the Highland 4-H Club will see their hard work pay off at the Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale, where their projects will be judged and some going up for auction.

Club members have been raising animals, such as steers and heifers, since last fall and recently showed them off at the Highland 4-H Achievement Day.

The program is geared toward teaching youth responsibility, says Cheryl Monical, a leader with Highland 4-H.

"They're responsible for handling that animal, for feeding it, for grooming it. You reap what you sow.

"If you're not going to put the work into it, your results will usually reflect that."

The five members of the Highland 4-H Club range in age from 12-17 and include Morgyn Reid of Williams Lake, Jordan and Colton Monical of 108 Mile Ranch and Caitlyn Flynn and Wyatt Miles of 134 Mile.

Top results in the Highland 4-H Club Achievement Day – first through fifth are as follows:

• Market steer - J. Monical, Flynn, Miles, C. Monical and Reid.

• Senior showmanship – Flynn, Miles and C. Monical.

• Junior showmanship – J. Monical and Reid. won the Heifer category, followed by Flynn

• Heifer – C. Monical, Flynn and Miles.

• Cow/calf – J. Monical, C. Monical and Miles.

The club traditionally draws members from the 100 Mile House and Lac la Hache area.

4-H is a youth engagement organization with clubs in several different countries. In B.C., there's a total of 160 clubs and 2,264 members.
