Brandon McEwen holds one of the babies that participants used to learn how to change diapers during babysitting course put on by Canlan Ice Sports recently.

On Jan. 28, Canlan Ice Sports held a babysitting course for boys and girls aged 11-16 years to teach young adults basic babysitting skills.

It gave them an opportunity to earn an official Red Cross Babysitting ticket if they passed a short test at the end of the day.

Instructor Tara Grinyer says she takes her time to teach the students how to change diapers, to decide on what games to play with young children, and safety. She makes the day-long course fun by using brainteasers to help the students learn.

Anja Dunk, 12, had a great time learning about children's behaviour and how to deal with problems that may come up while babysitting.

A big part of babysitting is learning how to be in charge while having fun with the children, says Juztis Vose.

Overall, the students seemed to be having a great time getting their babysitting tickets, and say they are looking forward to trying what they have learned.
