Student Lorne Granberg, from Green Lake, recently finished his honours microbiology degree at University of British Columbia (UBC), and will continue his education in the field this summer.

He's doing a volunteer mission somewhere in Bali, Indonesia, teaching basic health skills to residents of a community. He'll find out exactly where he will be based, when he gets there.

His career goal is to become a medical doctor and Granberg says he figures this experience will provide him with valuable hands-on training.

Granberg graduated from Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School in 2007 before taking up studies at the UBC Okanagan campus.

He's volunteering with an organization called Volunteer Headquarters and will be in Bali for two weeks, beginning the program on June 17.

It will be quite a turnaround from his usual summer employment on the family ranch, and Granberg says he's excited.

"Schools like to see students do this kind of thing, but it was my personal choice. I hope it will be a gateway for doing Doctors without Borders one day."

Dentist, Dr. Robert Beaton, who has a practice in 100 Mile House, donated a box of hygiene supplies, which Granberg will use during his volunteer stint.
