Fun galore at 100 Mile House Kidney Walk

Come down to Centennial Park on Aug. 18 and join in the fun and fundraising with the Third Annual Kidney Walk

Come down to Centennial Park on Aug. 18 and join in the fun and fundraising with the Third Annual Kidney Walk in 100 Mile House.

Registration is at 9 a.m. and the easy 2.5-kilometre walk leaves the park at 10 a.m. The route goes up Cedar Avenue, turns right on Fifth Street, through the Highway 97 underpass, around the 100 Mile Marsh and back to the park the same way.

There will be a lot to see and do, says this year’s local co-ordinator Dar Cook.

There’s live entertainment with singer Gary Seminoff, and Ben Johnson will be performing as well. The 100 Mile House Highland Dancers and Williams Lake Pipe Band will be on hand, too.”

Other activities include face painting with Catcheye Facepainting, which also does glitter tattoos and balloon animals.

There is a silent auction and some of the items on the table are autographed Canuck pucks and a portrait of Trevor Linden.

The Knights of Columbus will be serving breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m.

This year’s honouree Craig Conklin, who is preparing to donate a kidney to a young friend in his family, will be manning the barbecue.

Save-On-Foods is providing the barbecue and the food, and 108 Sausage Company sausages will also be on the menu.

Cook says they need some more volunteers and those interested can call her at 250-395-2444.

People who want to participate in the walk (no registration fee) or to sponsor someone can sign up at www.100milehousekidneywalk.ca. Forms can also be picked up at the pharmacy counters at Donex, Save-On-Foods, and Pharmasave.

This year. Cook says there will be vendor booths at the park and vendors are asked to donate a percentage of their proceeds to the Kidney Foundation.

Proceeds from the day help fund a children’s camp at Zajac Ranch in Mission. Funds are also targeted for housing in Vancouver for patients getting treatment, including a townhouse set up for children and their families.

Short-term and emergency financial assistance to kidney patients, the Kidney Connect Peer Support Program, and literature on topics, such as what to expect when getting a transplant, are also funded by the Kidney Walks, Cook explains.

It’s going to be an awesome day. We invite everyone to come on down and enjoy the day.”
