Forest Grove moving forward with curling dreams

Old score boards (note the sponsor) at the Forest Grove Curling Club wait faithfully for the games to begin.

The organizers of the Forest Grove Curling Club were pleasantly surprised when 27 people joined them for a planning meeting March 25.

The reason for the meeting was to see if there is enough community support to proceed with plans to resurrect the club.

Three years ago, a thriving curling club was brought to a grinding halt when the refrigeration equipment to make the curling ice had a catastrophic failure. This aged equipment had done the job for many years and it was time to replace it.

The high cost of this major upgrade was out of the reach of the small club, so everything was put on hold.

Then, the organizers learned about some ice-making equipment being sold in Abbotsford, and after a little digging, they found their replacement ice plant was within reach.

They had some funds held over, but the questions still lingered as to whether they do it and would the curlers return once it's running?

The March 25 meeting answered those questions. When the question was asked, all those in attendance raised their hands to show their support.

From the many questions that were raised, it was clear to see a group of active participants was needed to get things going. Soon they had a group struck and immediate plans were made for the first meeting.

This group will work in close association with the Forest Grove Recreation Society and help iron out many of the wrinkles that will surely rise before the club is back in full swing.

Annual membership dues, obtaining partial funding for the capital expenditures, and learning the fine art of making good sheets of curling ice are some of the issues that need to be resolved early in this project.

As we sat in this meeting, there was a sense of optimism present - a feeling that good things would come out of this effort.

I couldn't help but think of the 1989 movie Field of Dreams where Ray (Kevin Costner) heard a voice say, "If you build it, he will come."

Magical appearance

Forest Grove Legion is having a double-header on April 16.

The first item is the open dart tournament. Registration is required on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and the tournament takes place in the afternoon.

Then, from 8 to 11:30 p.m., Chris Yuell will entertain with his comedic and magic talents.

He has been in the Grove in the past and always leaves everyone talking about and wondering how he performed those magic tricks. It's a show you don't want to miss and remember there is limited seating.

Of course, the weekly meat draws from 4:30 to 6 p.m. will take place as usual.

They are planning to provide a designated driver service, which is something new for this event. Arrangements are currently being made to provide this important service to get you home safely, should you feel you need assistance.

Big fight

He's not a rock star; he's a former 100 Mile House boy who has taken boxing to the next level.

Ken Huber, grandson of Bradley Creek resident Marg Huber, takes his boxing very seriously.

In his 88-kilogram class, Ken has racked up numerous victories, including 2010 Bronze Glove Champ and 2011 Silver Glove Champ.

He will be fighting at the Colombo Lodge in Kamloops on April 9. The dinner/boxing show starts at 7 p.m., and the $60 tickets are going fast at $60.

Contact his dad, Paul Huber, at 250-376-3190 for tickets or for more details on this event.
