Fifteen Deka Lake people complete Occupational First Aid course

Community news happening around the Deka Lake area of the South Cariboo

Ten members of Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department (DL&DVFD), together with three members of its Ladies Auxiliary (LA,) and two junior firefighters-in-training, spent March 9 doing or renewing the WorkSafe BC Occupational First Aid Level 1 course.

Thompson Nicola Training instructor Ralph Smith travelled from Kamloops, and according to the LA's Mary Weight, he was an excellent instructor. She noted the course was really good, with invaluable knowledge, and said those who had not already taken it should be sure to catch the next opportunity.

AED purchase considered

The DL&DVFD Ladies Auxiliary's (AL) March meeting confirmed the annual bake sale for May 19, and the annual Fall Dinner for Saturday (a change from the usual Sunday,) Oct. 26.

The raffle will be drawn at the dinner, and raffle tickets will be available in June.

During the First Aid course, which was attended by some members, a discussion was held regarding the possibility of the LA purchasing at least one Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Deka area. This would depend on cost, and the matter is being researched.

In view of the fact the Cariboo Regional District will not permit an AED to be housed at the fire hall, several LA members have committed to accessibly housing AED on their own properties.

Catch limits

It should be noted the daily catch limit of kokanee from Deka Lake is five. As of April 1, the daily lake trout limit will be three.

Guest artist

Nigel Hemingway is the guest artist in Bridge Lake Library's Community Showcase for the month of April.

A resident of 100 Mile House for more than 30 years, the well-known surveyor says he automatically takes photos in his work.

"I've been interested in photography for quite a while, but I joined the Bridge Lake Photo Group about 18 months ago. They are an incredible group to learn from and my photography has really taken off since then."

Nigel's display – mostly landscapes – will include local shots, as well as some from across Canada to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and down into the United States, especially Death Valley.
