Now that the summer holidays have come to an end, as many of you know, the school year has begun once again. This is a very exciting time for kids who are going back to school whether that be elementary or high school.

Most schools in our area start at around 8:45 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m.. However, some of the elementary schools start at around 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:15 p.m..

Please always be aware of students from the high school who may be walking across the streets and the highway in the morning, at lunch time and after school. Please remember when traveling through a school zone, the speed limit is 30km an hour.

At the elementary level, students are not permitted to leave the school premises during school hours, although there is always the exception of field trips.

Many kids have after school activities that they may be heading to later in the day such as soccer, rugby and track and field, which aren’t always held at the school and may be held in different locations around 100 Mile House.

In your local neighbourhoods, you might notice there are children walking on the sides of the road to get to their bus stops. Be cautious and slow down when seeing these young kids. Many of the bus routes around the area have been switched, causing children to have to walk up to 20 minutes to their stops. It is beginning to get dark earlier which can be more dangerous when walking home. Always remember to turn your lights on!

There are many new and learning drivers on the roads, so always be patient when driving near them. You can identify these new drivers by the red and white L and the green and white N placed on the back of the vehicle.

Even though the warm summer is coming to a close, let's all have a happy cosy fall season with lots of beautiful orange, yellow and red leaves drifting off the trees!
