Area students Noah Harvey and Twila McIntosh got to meet BC Lions slotback Emmanuel Arceneaux at the football team’s Skills 4 Life Summit in Vancouver.

In the middle of October, Forest Grove Elementary School principal Mikel Brogan says he noticed online that there was an opportunity to apply to have two students from the area go and meet the BC Lions.

“The students would be able to watch a game at field side and be part of a special conference put on by the BC Lions players to teach participants about how to be leaders in their school and communities.

“This fit well into what we are trying to do as a school, which is teaching our students to be positive leaders in their community. I made sure to apply immediately as this was something that I knew would mean a lot to the students of my school,” says Brogan.

Brogan says he was a bit surprised but very happy when he learned his application was successful.

To give away the prizes, he drew the names from deserving students who had won the opportunity to put their name in the school’s monthly draw.

This year, Forest Grove Elementary School started a new initiative in which students receive “Golden Tickets” when they are spotted doing something positive in the school. At the end of the month, names are drawn from a special bucket and prizes are awarded.

In November, two of those prizes were the opportunity to be flown down to Vancouver with their families to attend the BC Lions event. The winning students were Noah Harvey and Twila McIntosh.

“I was very happy to see both of these students win the prize as they are both strong leaders in our school and are always going above and beyond in helping both teachers and other students. They are excellent role models in our school and I am ecstatic that they got the opportunity to go to Vancouver with their families to meet the BC Lions and participate in such aspecial leadership opportunity.”

Brogan says he was excited about the skills they learned at the conference and that they brought their new found knowledge back into our school and community.
