Education bursary available for 70 Mile area

Once again a $300 bursary will be available for students from the 70 Mile area

The 70 Mile and Area Community Bursary Fund Society is once again offering a $300 bursary for furthering education or skills training.

The bursary can be awarded to anyone young or old who has a connection to the area (basically the catchment area of the former 70 Mile Elementary School) who wishes to develop skills or further their education.

The applicant/recipient doesn't have to live in the 70 Mile and Area to be considered for this bursary as long as they have a connection to the area.

For example, they could be former students of 70 Mile Elementary School, but they could also be parents, children or grandchildren of former students. Applicants could also be current residents or children or grandchildren of people who live in the area.

The bursary has been awarded annually since 2013. Recipients have been from 83 Mile, 70 Mile House, North Green/Watch Lake areas, and also to a student who has spent a lot of time (summers and holidays) with their grandparents who live in the area.

In 2015, the society was able to award three bursaries (one for $300 and two for $200). Other years, they have awarded one bursary of $300.

The money for these bursaries started with money left in the school's parent advisory committee and the school's Jackrabbits ski club when the school was closed in 2000.

It was decided to use the money for continuing the educational legacy of the little school and to give people with a strong connection to this rural area a helping hand towards reaching their goals.

The fund increased with donations from different individuals and groups, some donations in memory of a former student, support from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and then a matching grant of more than $9,500 from the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT).

The fund is held by the BC Interior Community Foundation, which invests the money so there will be interest available to provide a bursary every year.
