Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett was clearly delighted to be surrounded by a bevy of preschoolers in costume when she cut the ceremonial ribbon at the grand opening of the South Cariboo Early Years Centre at Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre recently.

The grand opening of the South Cariboo Early Years Centre (SCEYC) in 100 Mile House welcomed dozens of people at the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC) recently.

The SCEYC will help support families with children from birth to six years, and also help strengthen co-ordination of services and programs to better meet their needs.

Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett cut the ceremonial ribbon with the help of a large group of preschoolers, and gave a short speech.

"I have to thank the board of the centre, and I have to thank Lisa De Paoli (CFEC executive director) ... she does a fabulous job filling in these [funding] applications, believe you me."

The SCEYC in 100 Mile House is one of 12 opening across the province to support families in rural locations.

Barnett noted the centre's mobile play group is also taking SCEYC services out to several area communities.

De Paoli expressed her gratitude to the local government representatives for turning out for the opening celebration, and thanked Barnett, particularly, for her role in "always advocating for the South Cariboo" at the provincial government level.

District of 100 Mile House Mayor Mitch Campsall and Cariboo Regional District Area H Director Margo Wagner also spoke at the celebration.

Public health nurse Debbie Morgan attended, and said she thinks Interior Health and all the health nurses are pleased to see the South Cariboo receive funding for the centre.

"We know in this area it is difficult to support families, and I think CFEC working with their early childhood development network has really [promoted and provided] these outreach services."
