One of the area’s most popular fundraising events is fast approaching, and those wanting to attend are encouraged to get their tickets before it’s too late.

Ducks Unlimited will be hosting its 33rd annual banquet dinner and auction on March 17 at the 100 Mile Community Hall, and tickets to the fun and festive event sold out early last year.

According to committee member Chris Nickless, the banquet and auction is one of the local chapter’s biggest fundraising efforts, which has helped the group raise more than $500,000 since 1984. Money raised has helped support local conservation efforts including the 100 Mile Marsh, Walker Valley, Soda Lake and the 130 Mile Wetlands.

Citing threats such as wildfire, human encroachment and changes in weather patterns, Nickless says it’s more important than ever that residents take steps to protect the wetlands and its inhabitants throughout the Cariboo region.

“I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy and protect our natural environment as we are so lucky to have these wonderful wetlands and waterfowl here in the Cariboo region,” Nickless says.

In the Pacific Interior region of B.C., more than 1 million breeding and migrating waterfowl from 24 different species rely on the healthy wetlands to thrive, according to Ducks Unlimited.

In the Okanagan Valley, more than 85 per cent of the wetlands have been lost to development and human encroachment.

Next month’s fundraiser promises to be a fun-filled night out, says Nickless, including a delicious dinner followed by an exciting auction featuring dozens of local items. There will also be prizes for best St. Patrick’s day costume.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. and the auction to follow.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at Donex, the 108 Mile Supermarket, Life Cycle Financial or the 100 Mile Free Press.
