Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department chief Al Boyce and Ladies Auxiliary president Donna Jarvis cut the cake at the appreciation dinner for the auxiliary on April 19.

Nearly 30 members of Deka Lake and District Volunteer Fire Department's (DLDVFD) Ladies Auxiliary enjoyed a sumptuous roast beef dinner April 19.

The meal was cooked, served and cleaned up by Deka firefighters in their handsome dress uniforms, as a thank-you for the auxiliary’s hard work all year.

Except for cards, flowers and amounts donated to people in distress, all money raised by the auxiliary goes to the fire department and generally amounts to more than $5,000 a year.

The evening included personalized thank-you cards and a decadent cake inscribed 'Thank You Ladies from Your Firemen." Auxiliary members were most grateful to receive their appreciation.

Cleanup day

On May 29, the auxiliary asks residents to clean the roads and ditches outside their homes, as far as their nearest permanent neighbours.

Everyone then meets at the firehall at 11a.m. and does Burgess Road to Mahood Lake Road, and then returns to the firehall for refreshments provided by DLDVFD

Crafty classes

Bridge Lake Community School is offering a silk-painting class at 1 p.m. on May 15.

The cost is $15 including the scarf. Register by May 13.

A moss hanging basket class is offered at 10 a.m., May 21. Register by May 16 to get a list of supplies. The cost is $5.

Mary Brown passes

Early Interlakes residents will be sorry to learn Mary Brown passed away mid-April, at the age of 92, in Campbell River.

She and her husband, Bill, who passed away in 2006, came here from Seattle. They bought a large piece of land at the end of East Sheridan Lake Road where they built an airstrip, and Bill was known as the Flying Realtor.

The family lived here for several decades before moving to Cortez Island in the early ‘80s.

Further information is available from Joanne Levick at 250-593-4570.

Party time

The Kids and Teen Space wrap-up party will be held at Interlakes Hall on May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The popular bonfire and hotdogs will be back, and music will be provided by Cariboo Presbyterian Pastor Bruce Wilcox. The theme is gratitude and the youths will make Inukshuk bags. The event is open to all Interlakes youths aged five and up.

Celebrations

Residents of Deka Lake welcome newcomers Norm Pickering, and Marc and Denise Robin, and look forward to meeting them.
