The hunt is on to find a photo to feature on the cover of the 2025 South Cariboo Visitor's Guide.
This year the 100 Mile Free Press and the South Cariboo Visitor Centre are teaming up to run a contest to find a cover photo that embodies the South Cariboo. Until the end of January local photographers, be they professional, amateur or casual, are invited to submit their favourite photos of the community for consideration.
"We are working on the visitor's guide this year and we try to put in as many great photos as we can on the cover of the visitor's guide. We usually try to do something active that showcases our outdoors and nature," Julie Gilmore, the manager of the South Cariboo Visitor Centre, said. "We thought we would reach out and see if the people taking some beautiful photographs of the area would submit them to be on our cover to showcase the South Cariboo in a different way."
Gilmore noted this is the first time the visitor centre has done a contest like this, though the District of 100 Mile House has run one in the past.
To enter photographers are invited to go to 100milefreepress.net under our contest tab and select the Beautiful South Cariboo contest. Submission must include the name of the photographer, the location of the photograph and the date it was taken. If people are featured their first and last names as well as their consent to be printed is also required. Gilmore said submissions can also be emailed directly to the visitor centre at southcaribootourism@100milehouse.com.
Photographers may make as many submissions as they like provided each submission is of a different photograph. Subjects may include local landmarks, community events, the Cariboo's natural beauty and wildlife.
"(We are looking for) nature, water skiing, kayaking, boating, fishing, all kinds of activities out in nature with scenery like the lakes, the hills and trees in the background," Gilmore remarked. "If you have a great nature shot or think you have a real good shot to put on the cover of the guide, I encourage everyone to send their shots in."
In addition to having their photo featured on the cover of this year's visitor's guide, the winner will also receive a basket worth over $100. Gilmore said that runner-up photos may also be included within the visitor's guide itself on appropriate pages or in the visitor centre's marketing materials throughout the year.
A winner will be announced within the first two weeks of February. Gilmore said members of the South Cariboo Visitor's Centre and the District of 100 Mile House will select the winner. Anyone looking for further information on the contest can email southcaribootourism@100milehouse.com. or publisher@100milefreepress.net.
"Everyone have fun, snap your photos and we look forward to seeing everyone's submissions," Gilmore remarked.
