On Jan. 10, Kalen Dyck became the first recipient of the Clinton Health Care Auxiliary Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded by the Clinton Health Care Auxiliary to Clinton graduates who wish to pursue an education in the field of health care at a university, college, technical school, trade school or business college of their choice.

Kalen, a graduate of David Stoddart Secondary School, is currently studying to become a doctor.

Literacy plan

Daniela Dyck, Village of Clinton literacy co-ordinator, had attended the Health and Wellness Fair where she had a sign-up sheet and questionnaire asking if there was interest in Computing for Seniors course.

The response was overwhelming, so Dyck is working to deliver a course in early spring. She hopes some of the local youths will act as mentors to help with the teaching.

Later, she wants to offer a course in home cooking that will be taught by some of the seniors.

There was also support for a Red Book Shelf project. This is a free book exchange located centrally in the community where residents can borrow a book, read it and then return it or replace it with one of their own.

Legion events

The Clinton branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is hosting a “HAIR-itage Community Challenge” to all comers.

This event challenges both men and women to participate. Women can grow their hair and men their moustaches. Participants can register and get more information at the Legion. Registrations will close at the end of business on Jan. 29.

The challenge is open to men and women aged 19 or older. Winners will be announced and the prizes awarded on May 14.

Net proceeds from registrations will be put towards the handicap ramp fund.

’50s Dance

If you long for the carefree days of the 1950s, you can experience them again on Feb. 5 when the Clinton Legion hosts a ‘50s dance.

Fifties-style food will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This will be followed by Music by Iris. Tickets go on sale Jan. 22.

Winterfest

Clinton is gearing up for Winterfest 2011 to be held the last week of February.

Several Clinton organizations have already signed up to sponsor events.

There will be curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments, a snow sculpture contest, and much more.

Clinton organizations are each being invited to take on an event.

They can contact Val Bissat at 250-459-0055 to let the Recreation Commission know what their group would like to host.
