Classic cars, model planes delight 100 Mile House seniors in Centennial Park

‘Well the cars remind them of their youth, you can see the glimmer in their eyes…’

Senior citizens in 100 Mile House were transported through time by classic cars and delighted by model planes in Centennial Park on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The gathering was a joint effort by the Adult Day Service Program, the 100 Mile Model Flyers and the 100 Mile Cruzers Car Club.

Jan Baker, a volunteer for adult day services, said it’s important to get the seniors out to see “all these lovely things.”

The seniors love watching the model planes flying and it’s a great opportunity to get outside, she said.

Volunteers have taken the seniors to Ainsworth Road, in the 99 Mile, where the model flyers’ club meets before and Baker said, “They just love it.”

As for the classic cars, she said many recognize the older cars, “so it’s kind of like taking them back in time.”

Brian Motte, a member of the 100 Mile Cruzers, agreed.

“A lot of the old folks, like me, go along and they say, “I had one like that, and I had one like that when I was growing up’,” he said, “so it brings back memories for them.”

Jim Williscroft, the former president of the 100 Mile Cruzers, said the club has done their best to help seniors over the years.

“I think it’s important to incorporate the seniors into everything. They’re very much an important part of our community.”

He said you can see how the combination of model planes and cars from their youth puts a “glimmer in their eyes.”

“It’s a beautiful outing for them,” he said, adding that the Centennial Park setting makes it “just magnificent.”

John Code, the secretary of the 100 Mile Model Flyers, said the club has done many “static displays” with its models at seniors’ homes and residences in the past.

This is, however, the first classic car and model plane joint display.

When they were approached by a member of both clubs, Code said they thought it was a great idea.

“They’re all quite enthusiastic about it,” he said. “They always enjoy getting out and doing something different.”
