Dear Canimites,

The Forest Grove Rod & Gun Club held its first fishing derby at Howard Lake on Sept. 17.

The 28 registrants had a good day of it, with many fine fish coming through the scales. Fishers from the 108 took top honours.

Alex Dufresne won with a rainbow of 2 lbs. 2 oz., using a green woolly bugger trolled deep.

Second place went to Dorothy Buss, with a two-pound rainbow caught on a willow leaf and worm.

Club president Michael Dopf said the event was "all about fun for the community" and an opportunity to make the club better known.  He offered a huge thanks to Henry Doksansky for his effort and skill in organizing the derby.

The 30-member club hosts a fun shoot on the first Sunday of each month at their range, and the Fred Saenger Memorial Shoot in May.

Ill winds

High winds last week brought trees down on power lines throughout the area, despite BC Hydro's extensive efforts to remove danger trees.

The community at Mahood Lake lost power for 36 hours.

The home of Barb Konradt on the Mahood Lake Road was lost to fire during the blackout, along with all the outbuildings.  The fire started in the early hours of Sept. 25.

Barb's dog, Reba, woke to the smoke, escaped out its dog-door and circled the house to the bedroom window where it barked until Barb woke up and made her escape.

Neighbours were unable to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, Barb is unhurt.

The Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to a localized fire on Kokanee Road caused by an aspen leaning on the power lines, and then to a downed line on the South Canim Road. Deputy chief Ron Lister says residents should dial 9-1-1 immediately that they see such problems.

Hawkins Lake fire chief Bob Campbell says a line came down on the Eagle Creek Road. Responders placed traffic cones to warn motorists, and established a safe detour for vehicles.

CRD election

Ron Lister and Margo Wagner have announced their candidacy for Area H director on the Cariboo Regional District board.

Thanks to both of them for their ongoing commitment to the community and their willingness to undertake this important role.

People news

* Andrea Dobbs lost her three-month-old colt to a cougar.

Two other adult horses owned by the Dobbs family were wounded in attacks. All were pastured at the 22-kilometre mark of the South Canim (8100) Road.

Two dogs in the area have also been attacked. Cougar traps have now been set by conservation officers.

Andrea's colt was bred for competition and was of outstanding character and conformation, making this a very sad loss for the talented young rider.

* Louis Judson celebrated his 87th birthday on Sept 22.

His mother travelled by horse and buggy and stage coach from their home on Bradley Creek to the hospital in Ashcroft for his birth. Aside from spells away for various jobs, he has lived his entire life here.
