The 2011 Canim Lake Community Club executive includes secretary Bev McGregor

Dear Canimites,

The first bleary-eyed Canim black bear stumbled across Udo Keimsted's hay fields on April 13, roused it seems by the ineluctable aroma of Udo's blueberry pancakes.

A hummingbird buzzed Louise Kerr on April 21, checking out her flowerbeds and demanding a rapid deployment of the sugar feeders.

Although winter dragged its feet in leaving, spring's arrival could not be denied.

Community Club

The club held its regular and annual general meetings at Margo's Cabin on April 13.

Art Dumaresq and I huddled together on the fringes while 12 energetic and committed Canim and Hawkins lakes women dealt with the year's plans.

Art gave an update from the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) on the community's grow-op concerns. In a nutshell, work is underway to form a group that will review how the CRD can assist the RCMP in policing grow-ops.  Included in the review are the legislative constraints that currently limit the CRD contribution to the effort.

The club had a good year financially in 2010, with revenue exceeding expenses by $1,109.

Following the election of the executive, a lunch was served, including quiche, curried chicken in phyllo pastry, smoked salmon samosa, sausage rolls, a veggie plate and fruit pies, making this the "go-to" group if you like to eat well.

Nursery tour

May 17 is the nursery tour and lunch at the Little Horse Lake Lodge.

This will be a driving trip, full of fun, gardening talk and good eats. Call Jean Reynolds at 250-397-2773 for more information and to work out a ride-share.

Annual sale

May 28 is the day of the big Plant and Bake Sale at the Canim Lake Store from 9 a.m. to noon.

There will be 24 hanging baskets loaded with blooms, as well as cuttings from local gardens. Crafts will include the innovative wind chimes and quilted bags produced by the 3 C's group.

There will also be a ton of good baking, including Lynne Baker's cinnamon buns. Warning: there will only be 10 dozen of these available, so be early or oh so sad!

At noon, Bob Hicks will serve up his tender and tasty beef ribs. He plans to donate the proceeds to the Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department (FGVFD) for their Halloween fireworks display.

Relay for Life

The Canim Lake/Hawkins Lake Relay for Life cancer walk team is forming up, this year under the auspices of the club.

The walk takes place June 11 in 100 Mile from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Team members put in a four-hour shift of their choosing, taking turns walking during that period.

The theme is Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back!  Contact Sheila Hart at 250-397-2645 for details.

Canim COPS

The Canim Citizens on Patrol met on April 3.

The organization acts under the auspices of the RCMP, with members of the group making frequent unscheduled patrols of the western end of the lake, from the Canim Beach around to the Howard Lake Road. Patrols maintain radio contact with a dispatcher, and note any unusual activity or unrecognized vehicles.

Area residents continue to complain about traffic moving too fast in certain stretches. COPS members are receiving training in the use of a speed board, a large lighted sign that advises a driver of their true current speed.

It is hoped the equipment will be in use by the summer, making it a safer season for all.

The group is preparing a letter to local residents to request financial support.

That's all for now. Until next time, here's wishing you many spring blessings.
