An exchange student from Brazil visited 100 Mile House recently to enjoy some real Cariboo flavour, from sled dogs and snow to hamburgers and hockey.

Yara Patriota, 15, has been living in Kamloops for the past six months with Kathy McBride, the daughter of 100 Mile House residents Ken and Susan Fryer.

Susan says she and her family escorted Yara to the Cariboo Challenge Sled Dog Race last weekend, which was the teen's first time to see this northern winter sport.

She was quite taken by the dogs, and really loved the team she got to hug in the pictures [I took].”

When Yara returns to Brazil at the end of January, she must write and submit a paper to her school about her adventures, so the exchange student is excited about including tales about her experiences in the South Cariboo.

Yara loves Canada, Susan adds, especially experiencing her first snow and her first hockey game.

The teen also tried downhill skiing – her favourite new activity – as well as snowshoeing and other activities.

Her favourite new food is any burger from the A & W.”
