More than 100 farmers’ market organizers, farmers, food producers, artisans, and community leaders from across British Columbia gathered at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort & Conference Centre in Kelowna recently.

They were there to explore how healthy farmers’ markets can support healthy communities in the coming season.

"I think there were over 140 people at the conference,” says Tina Johnson, president of the local South Cariboo Farmers' Market (SCFM).

It was so packed with different workshops. I hit the bed every night exhausted.

"Candace Suderman came with me. It was her first conference and she was a bit overwhelmed."

More than 15 events and workshops, led by B.C.’s health and local food experts on various issues, presented information. Topics included food waste reduction, farmland protection and food safety.

Johnson says she found all the workshops she was able to attend very interesting. She adds they were broken into three groups for vendors, managers and board members.

"It can be challenging as a volunteer. One of the manager workshops was on wellness, making sure you look after yourself."

Johnson says she also found the networking invaluable.

"There were talks on how to connect with your community; and how to encourage people to support their local farmer markets and help keep the money in the area."
