Area students sparkle in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Important and interesting news from the Bridge Lake and Interlakes areas

Accolades go to Interlakes youth who were part of the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School’s theatre group's presentation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which used two separate casts.

Sylvia Steeves was responsible for sound, its design and operation. Cast 1 included Carolyn Cook and Jake Jewitt, but it was Cast 2 this writer saw.

The part of Alice was co-played by Bridge Lake songstress Alicia Williamson, while Kim Rottluff excelled as the sad and aged Mock Turtle.

Kelly Diether, and her cohort Sarah Cushing of 105 Mile, were Tweedledum and Tweedledee. The human pair, of similar height and visage, managed to cultivate an identically-pitched monotone, somewhat reminiscent of Saturday Night Live. However the voices came about, they were superb and the girls' happy roly-poly roles, executed to perfection, simply stole the show.

Derby cancelled

Unfortunately, there will be no West Sheridan Lake Ice-Fishing Derby this year, as its stalwart worker Stan Matthews was scheduled for knee-replacement surgery on Jan. 17, and as he put it, "Can't stand around selling tickets."

Proceeds of this derby usually go to Snowarama to benefit the B.C. Lions Society for Children with Disabilities, specifically the four Easter Seal houses, so its funds will be sorely missed.

We send speedy get well wishes to Stan.

Budget meeting

The Cariboo Regional District's (CRD) annual Area L town hall meeting, which covers all Interlakes properties, will be held at Watch Lake Community Hall at 7 p.m., Feb. 6.

This is an opportunity to assess the CRD's 2012 budget and five-year financial plan, and to ask questions related to CRD services, such as the libraries, property taxes, including fire protection and waste management.

Softball registration

South Cariboo Minor Softball is taking early registration during February.

You can register anytime at the 100 Mile Sports Shop; or from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 4 and 25 at the A&W.

Kindergarten registration

Children who will turn five by Dec. 31, 2012 are currently registering for September's kindergarten.

The deadline is March 15. Children usually register at the school in their catchment area, and must present a birth certificate and BC Care Card.

Anyone not sure of their catchment area should contact their nearest elementary school for information.
