While vendor numbers were down at the annual Roe Lake Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 20, the event was still deemed a success.

Door prizes went to Pauline Black, Dawn Caldwell and Anne Pym.

On behalf of Interlakes Community Association, co-ordinator Verna Desjardine voiced her gratitude to the public for its support.

Community showcase

Lac des Roches resident Barry Reid, who makes Inukshuks, is the artist on display in Bridge Lake Library's Community Showcase for the month of December.

A great traveller, Barry has been a rock hound for years, collecting rocks from everywhere he's been, from the Arctic to the Sahara.

"Soon I had these great piles of rocks sitting around and wondered what I could do with them."

Then, when in Tuktoyaktuk, he saw these things out on the tundra, some of them really huge, and asked a soapstone artist about them. Of course, since Vancouver's 2010 Winter Olympic Games, most people know they were Inukshuks, which are given names and used as markers to point "the right way."

"I started trying to glue the rocks together without modification and, of course, they all fell apart in a heap. Then, my wife, Lois bought me a diamond saw, so now I cut flat spots to allow them to stay together. When you cut into them, some of them reveal glorious patterns of agate and jasper. And it's certainly something to do when you're retired and live up here."

While Barry has a large one at the top of his driveway, most of his Inukshuks range from two to six inches in height. They can also be found at the Stone Bear Gallery in 100 Mile House.
