Members of the 100 Mile House Nordics club travelled to Williams Lake on Feb. 25 to compete in the Bull Mountain Races, including a relay race where two teams of four from the club won first and second place.

“It went well. Most of the kids got a medal in their individual competitions as well,” said coach Kristi MacKenzie, one of the coaches.

Eight kids from the club’s Ski Development Program, ranging from 8-11 participated in the relay and the individual competitions were classic and freestyle with distances being based on age.

Luca Weir, Karl Lundsbye, Joelle Waldner Kuyek, Jordyn Meville, Jordan and Olivia Harper and MacKenzie’s two children, Will and Georgia were the eight kids involved.

Olivia came in second place in her 1.4-kilometre classic Group C female race. Jordan also came second in the male version of the race. Georgia came third in the Group C 1.7-kilometre female race. Kuyek came second in the Group D group. Weir and Will came second and third in the male version of the race. Lundsbye came in sixth for the Group B 600-metre classic male race.

In the freestyle competitions, Jordan came second in the Group C male event, Georgia came third in the Group C2 female event. Kuyek came in second in Group D and Will and Weir came second and third in the Male Group D.

“They had fun and they put in a great effort and they all did well for the amount of practice they’ve had skiing,” said MacKenzie. “I was very proud of them all. They all tried really hard and some of them persevered even with falling or having some struggles in the race.”

A wrap-up session for the program was also held on Feb. 24. The 18 students present participated in fun activities such as ski cross and some races before receiving their report card on how well they did during the season. Awards and badges were also given to the young athletes.

Five of the students are also heading to Revelstoke for another race over the weekend.

“I think they all feel about anxious about just because it’s a huge event with about 100 kids there,” said MacKenzie.

Georgia and Will, Meville, Weir and Kuyek will be the five racers going to Revelstoke.
