Don’t use power boats on Bridge Creek

To the editor:

I am writing to express my concern over the use of power boats on Bridge Creek, downstream from Skadays bridge. There are signs at the bridge stating it is a bird nesting and fish spawning creek and to respect the wildlife in the area.

More and more, there are people using high-powered jet boats, ski boats and jet skis on this very short and sensitive wildlife area. On June 17 at 10:30 p.m. (very dark) there was a large ski boat trapped against the 100 Mile dam. It took a long while before these clever sailors managed to get themselves free from the current against the dam. A few weeks ago there was a very powerful river jet boat roaring up and down the creek while fish were spawning and birds were nesting. It took over two hours for the silt to clear up in the water. I was almost hit by a fool on a jet-ski going as fast as he could around the serpentine bends of the creek, I was with my two grandchildren at the time on kayaks.

This is a very short shallow stretch of water, ideal for canoeing or kayaks, it is very peaceful and there is a lot of wildlife to be observed. There is a very large lake just above the bridge if you have not noticed which is ideal for the large powerful craft that are being used in a tiny sensitive creek. Come on! I know that common sense has no definition but please respect the wildlife on this shallow sensitive creek. It is designated a Heritage Creek as the sign says. There should be no power boats downstream from the bridge.

100 Mile maintains a flow structure on the creek, it poses a significant danger to anyone unwise enough to venture down it in the dark in a power boat. 100 Mile does not have any signage stating that there is a blockage across the creek which is impassable and a danger. 100 Mile could possibly be liable for any injuries because of this lack of diligence.

I will be petitioning Transport Canada to have a no power boat designation for this section of Bridge Creek. I hope any others who uses and enjoy this beautiful short stretch of water to do the same.
