Wilhelmine (Helma) BLUM

August 11, 1912 – April 2, 2008

Helma was born in Wiesbaden, Germany and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She passed away peacefully in Fischer Place, 100 Mile House, at 95 years young. Helma never seemed to be without her positive attitude and a smile. About life, she would say “You have to make the best out of it.” Helma came to Canada with her husband Erich in September 1955 and they made their way to Vancouver, BC. By 1960 she had opened her first health food store “3 Way Health Stores Ltd” which she operated with Erich. In 1973 they moved to Lac la Hache. At this time they opened another business, “3 Way Herbs Ltd.” selling herb teas which they blended themselves. They operated the tea business until about 1980 when Erich became ill. Erich passed away at the age of 68 in July 1982. Helma was a founding member of the O.A.P.O. #176 in Lac la Hache where she attended regularly until moving to 100 Mile House in December 1999. It was at the O.A.P.O. in 1982 that she met her new partner Delbert Porter Sr. They enjoyed many years together in their home on the shores of Lac la Hache. Helma moved to Fischer Place in 2000 and Del joined her there in 2001. Del passed away at the age of 86 in 2006. Helma loved to play all kinds of games through the years, right up to her last day with us. Unfortunately, Helma fell and broke her hip in the early morning of March 26. Although she received the very best care which included a partial hip replacement operation in Kamloops on March 27, she passed away unexpectedly on April 2 in her room. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Alois and Adelheid Kunz, by her sisters Hildegard and Anneliese, and by a baby brother. At Helma’s request, she will be cremated and there will not be a service. She will be sadly missed by her extended family, Delbert and Diane Porter as well as by her many friends.
