Umeko MINATO

February 5, 2005

Born on Feb. 16, 1908 in Wakayamaken, Japan. Passed away peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 5, 2005 at Mount St. Joseph Hospital, Vancouver, B.C. with her family by her side. Predeceased by her husband Keiji in Feb. 1978 and daughter-in-law, Toshimi in September 2001. Survived by five sons, Kaoru (Akiko), Sadao (Shirley), Haruo, Dick (Nancy) and Ken (Marianne); one daughter Margaret (Yew) Chang; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grand-children and companion cat, Miko. Also in Japan, survived by one sister and numerous nieces and nephews. In accordance to her wishes, a private family service was held at Vancouver Buddhist Church on Feb. 11, 2005, with Rev. Tatsuya Aoki and Bishop O. Fujikawa officiating, followed by cremation. Flowers and Koden gratefully declined. Our mother and grandmother will be remembered for her life long love and dedication to her family. Up until her last days at home, she enjoyed making sushi, baking pastries and crocheting afghans. She was forever grateful for her long healthy and independent life of almost 97 years. She taught us the value of family unity and asked that we continue to live in harmony. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
