Mary Evelyn SMITH nee Burns

May 2, 2008

Born July 9, 1920 in Richibucto, N.B. passed away peacefully at home in 100 Mile House, B.C. on May 2, 2008. Predeceased by her husband Albert Victor Smith in 1993, daughter Margery Grace and grandson Rodney. She grew up at Magna Bay, B.C. as the eldest of seven sisters and is survived by her brother Dan (Gillian) Burns, in Salmon Arm. Mom is lovingly remembered by her children Lorraine, Frank (Karen), Marion (Jim), George (Emelene), LaVerne (Roger) and many foster children. Grandma Mary was dearly loved by her 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her next two great-grand babies. Mary was also a beloved Auntie Mary to many nieces and nephews. We have lost a true pioneer, a woman of immense courage, optimism and industry. Mary and Bert homesteaded on Fox Mountain in Williams Lake in 1938, were active in the dairy industry in Armstrong 1953 to 1969 and then raised prize winning sheep at Merritt. In 1982 they retired back to the Cariboo, where they continued to be active in 4-H and community organizations. Mom loved to cook, garden, spin, knit and crochet and was thrilled to be able to pass these skills on to others. She was a generous and helpful friend to many as well as the heart of our family. We would like to thank her wonderful friends, neighbours, support workers and medical staff who all helped Mom maintain her cherished independent lifestyle. Service will be held at 1:00 pm May 24 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 5691 Horse Lake Rd., 100 Mile House, B.C.
