1926 - 2010

John Bokovay of Forest Grove passed away at his home on June 29, 2010. John was born September 9, 1926 in Gatineau, Québec. He went to work early in life and soon settled in at the C.I.P Paper Mill in Gatineau where he worked for the next 43 years until retirement. In 1949 he met the love of his life and he and Elizabeth (Betty) were married in 1951. They built a home in Gatineau in 1957 and raised both their sons there.

John loved the outdoors and passed on this interest to both his boys. Over the years they shared many memorable hunting and fishing adventures together. John was also an avid wildlife and bird watcher and enjoyed identifying the great variety of birds that came to the feeders he set out.

John had a keen interest in history and when his sons were young they regularly spent rainy days together visiting the national museums in the Ottawa/Gatineau area. He was also fascinated by the north and he was able to visit the James Bay Coast and the Yellowknife area over the years.

In 1989 John fulfilled a life long dream when he and Betty moved west and retired to a log home in the Cariboo. A few years later, the acquisition of a couple of horses rounded out that dream. Early retirement years were filled with construction projects around the home, caring for the horses and other pets and exploring the local area. More recently, his passion for reading took precedence and John devoured books by the dozen, his quest for knowledge and continuous learning was life long.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, sons Bruce of Calgary and Dave (Amanda) of Winnipeg, two grandsons Connor and Brody of Winnipeg, and two sisters Edna Coates of Chase and Sarah Bokovoy of Toronto. He was predeceased by his parents Alphonse and Zinovia and brothers, Alex, Boris, Paul, Willard, George, Victor, Thomas, and William.

John will be sadly missed by his family, neighbours and friends. An informal gathering of friends to celebrate John’s life will be held at the family home at a later date.
