High winds rekindle fire near park

Hollander: underground fire could have started months earlier

A small underground fire burst to life above ground near Centennial Park on Nov. 24.

100 Mile House Fire Rescue chief Roger Hollander says that upon arrival, the crew found a six-metre by six-metre wildland fire near the power lines just above the park and successfully extinguished it.

"The fire appeared to be deeply rooted underground so it was not a recent fire – weeks to months possibly since this fire had started."

It was likely due to the high winds giving enough oxygen for the fire to surface, he explains.

"A gentleman was able to notify us when he observed this fire coming from the trees when he was doing his daily walk there."
