43 per cent of the Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School 2017 graduate class, totalling 45 recipients, received $73,100 in scholarships according to Principal Geoffrey Butcher.

During the Scholarship Tea, scholarship donors come up and presented their scholarships to the chosen recipients. The presenters also have an opportunity to say a few words about the scholarship, their organization, company, the nominee or have a little conversation with the nominee.

“The primary reason for the development of the Tea is for the donors to get to meet the recipients and vice versa. In the past, the donors actually presented the scholarship/bursary to the student at the grad ceremonies. The donor was called forward and the student also came forward to accept the scholarship. Needless to say, this took quite a while and some donors were uncomfortable in front of such a large crowd. This evening format was a response to this problem. Essentially, the Tea was a more intimate way for donors and recipients to get together,” says Butcher.

When it comes to the students, Butcher had great things to say.

“As far as the night itself, it’s always nice to give money to deserving students. There was such a broad cross section of student career interests that the allocation of scholarships was very easy. Many scholarships are very specific as to the criteria but this year the students seemed to naturally fit into the criteria provided by the donors. This group of grads are very deserving and very nice people and I am sure they are very grateful for the scholarships provided and will use them to further their education.”
