100 Mile House Save-on-Foods raises $22,600 for BC Children’s Hospital

Local store reaches goal on last day of fundraising

The 100 Mile House Save-on-Foods has raised $22,600 for the BC Children’s Hospital.

Between June of 2016 and May of 2017, the store raised money through a variety of initiatives including raffles, a round up your bill program and jean Fridays where staff could donate $2 to wear jeans to work.

They also sell the BC Children’s balloon icons, where customers can buy a balloon for a donation and paste it on the window.

“The majority of the money all comes from our customers and team members,” says Richard Bullen, who manages the store.

Last year, the store raised $15,000 for the hospital. This year, they upped their goal to $22,000 and hit their goal on the very last day.

“We had one last push because we were $90 away going into the last two days,” says Jake Martin, the assistant manager who oversaw the fundraising.

“We think it’s fantastic support from our community,” says Bullen.

According to 2015 numbers, 89 families in 100 Mile House and 35 families in the South Cariboo made a combined 451 visits to the BC Children’s Hospital.

“A lot of people rely on the hospital,” says Martin.

“People see it as something way down in Vancouver but it is making a huge impact on our community.”
