Students at 100 Mile House Elementary School raised $160 for their Terry Fox run on Sept. 21.
“They brought some money in and their names go into a draw for t-shirts,” said Shawn Nelson, the vice principal of the school.
Nelson said the process of fundraising for causes such as cancer in schools, especially ones with younger students, is quite important.

“It gives them a sense of community and I think it’s bigger than their school or classroom or the District of 100 Mile House or the province. I think that big connectedness to the world is an important thing,” he said, before specifically addressing fundraisers for cancer. “I think it’s a brutal disease [and] that it is something that needs to be fixed in our community and if it takes throwing money at it, I’m very much for it. Let’s raise more money.”
The school would usually go to Centennial Park and run a set course but due to the weather, the students ran a few laps around the school’s boundaries after being treated to a short documentary video about Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.
Nelson figures the school will be back in the park for the next Terry Fox Day.
