There will be many smiling happy people up on Spout Lake Road this week! Yes, the grader is working on the many potholes that have surfaced this early spring, I saw him starting to work yesterday and gave him a big thumbs up!

Volunteer appreciation

The volunteer appreciation dinner went over well on Sunday, April 23. The volunteers and their families enjoyed a great dinner of salad, pizza, various drinks and a yummy dessert. As usual, we ordered way more food than was needed and many people got to take home care packages! President Larry McCrea gave a short speech talking about the community hall which was built in 1936 and summarized some of the improvements that have been made throughout the years and some of most recent improvements. The various directors in charge of events were introduced and acknowledged for all their hard work and efforts to make the Community Club a success. At this time, it was publicly announced that our next project to tackle is the wheelchair accessible handicap washroom. Big thanks to Jeanette and Larry McCrea who took on the responsibility of organizing this dinner.

Some interesting things that came up at our last community club meeting are as follows:

- The new furnace has been installed in the hall and many thanks go out to Percy Ogden and his crew for a job well done. It appears however that more insulation is needed in the kitchen area and that will be done before next winter.

- Applications have been received and the successful Peter Skene Ogden graduates have been chosen for the scholarship grants. Stay tuned at a later date for finding out who they are – congratulations to all!

Roller derby

Heather de Ruiter brought in her proposal for the roller derby use of the arena. It appears that it was unanimous that this is something we will be doing this summer. Since they wanted to start fairly quickly their dream has come true – all the ice is melted at the arena now. Good luck with this Heather and several people have already donated roller skates for any new skaters. The demonstration will be on May 15 at 7 p.m. at the arena. Contact Heather at 250-396-7676 for information.

Community market

There is very little interest in having the community market this year, director Wendy Williams will stay in contact with the people who have expressed an interest though

Big axe

Brittany will be in charge of spiffing up the big Axe, brighten it up and make it more visible.

Spaghetti Dinner

Reminder: The Spaghetti Dinner and silent auction are to be held at the Pioneer Center on Saturday, May 6. The doors open at 5 p.m., dinner is at 6 and the auction starts 7 – lots of nice items have been donated.

The price of the tickets is $15.00 per person, and will also be available at the door.

Bingo

Bingo last night was a super busy time for us, 93 people came out all trying to win the big progressive jackpot and YES we finally have a winner! Congratulations to Carole Frank on her big win of $2550.00. There are still two big jackpots available so I am sure the crowd will still be coming, see you next week.
