Family fun Dad’s Day

Free event welcomes ages 0-6, parents and siblings

The Family Fun for Dad’s Day is a free dinner, fun, games, entertainment and other activities for families with children aged five years old or younger at the South Cariboo Rec Centre on Friday, June 16, from 5 to 7 p.m.

StrongStartBC representative Shelly Joyner says her group and the local Early Child Development Team are partnering with School District #27 to sponsor this free event with a dinner, plenty of fun activities for children (including bouncy castles), family photos, music, dancing and plenty more.

This event has been run for about six or seven years now, with a free drop-in and pizza dinner, and this year is welcoming families with or without a father who is able to attend along with them, she explains.

“We had about 350 people attend last year.”

Joyner says older siblings are welcome too, as long as a child aged 0-5 is present, along with at least one parent in your family team.

Other fun activities include blowing bubbles, chalk art, face painting, an animal petting farm, “fishing” for prizes and T-ball, as well as some free books, a story walk and a “baby zone” area for the wee ones.

This story walk is part of the season closure for the local StrongStart group, Joyner adds.

It involves a stroll around the trails at the marsh while reading a story aloud as you go, and activities along the way, guided by a member of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacy group, she says, adding it is so popular, their aim is to continue to hold it every month.

It’s not always held at the marsh – they set up several different places around town – but it always involves activities to do along the way while a story is read by their co-ordinator (or you can go on your own), she explains.

Joyner adds that for the June 16 Dad’s Day event, the Canlan Ice Sports has been a great help in arranging for the bouncy castles and providing other assistance, which is much appreciated.

“We can always use more volunteers if you care to come out and help.”
