Aboriginal Day event planned

Public invited to free public event with music, bannock and games

Aboriginal Day is June 21, and the Stemete7uw’i Friendship Centre is welcoming the community to come out for a public event in recognition of this important, Canada-wide event.

It all happens on Wednesday (June 21) from noon to 4 p.m., when the Stemete7uw’i Society is hosting this Aboriginal Day celebration with drumming, dancing, stick games and other activities.

Friendship Centre event and publicity co-ordinator Rob Diether says there will also be live guitar and fiddle music, an on the spot colouring contest for children, and fresh-made bannock (with all the fixings), as well as coffee and tea, fun – and friendship, of course.

“We had an outstanding turnout last year and we’re hoping to duplicate that again this year.”

Some students from Peter Skene Ogden Secondary will be there to join in the activities, and he hopes many folks from all over the community will turn out.

“It’s an opportunity for people in the South Cariboo to recognize and honour our First Nations in the community.”

The Stemete7uw’i “A Gathering Place” Friendship Centre is in the annex behind St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, at 106B Blackstock Road in 100 Mile House.

Aside from events, like this one, the Friendship Centre is normally open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday.
